Down and Distance

"Give me your hand," she said. "Your love-line and your life-line don't intersect." "You know what that means don't you?" No. "It means you better stop hedging your bets. That's what it means."

A swift-talking blue-blooded despot of modern society. Who takes them seriously, anyways? At some point we all do. But it's an illusion. You better stop taking things seriously if you want to be taken seriously. It gives an illusion of arrogant transcendence. I'll walk the line, whether it be my love-line, or my life-line, I might walk both of them at the same time. But maybe I'll run. Or maybe I'll pass.

Hey look at that?!?! What a lovely picture of people fulfilling their dreams! Good for them!

"At some point, you're going to have to come through in the clutch son. It won't be all the time. In fact, you'll fall flat on your face time and again, but there will be a time when you need it the most. I'm confident that you will. Are you? Because that's all that matters."

You rack up stats every day. Set records every day. Small wins and losses. All in the strategy of X's and O's; probable maneuvers; tactical excercises; accidental defeats, and improbable victories. It's all compiled and listed on the back of your card, with your picture on the front, in a striking pose. Hopefully the numbers will get you consideration for 'the Hall.' Your face (or likeness thereof), displayed proudly on the wall, beside the "Late Greats," in the Hall of Fame. Your accomplishments bested by no one.

Try to go out on top. At one point, Pete Townshend strongly believed that he wanted to go out on top. I heard him screaming about it on my radio this morning. He wanted to die before he got old. Before he burned out. I wonder if he still feels that way? I wonder if I will. I wonder who will.

When it's third and goal, and you can see your destination, and you can feel that feeling in your chest cavity, and you have the chance to impose your will on the obstacle before you, and you can earn nicknames like "Mr. October," or "The Natural"...what do you do?

You don't think. You let instinct take control, and you trust it with all you have.

Get up Mr. Tittle....

It's time for you to catch lightning in a bottle.
